Dental pulp is the soft area at the center of a tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are found. If a patient’s tooth has infected or diseased dental pulp, Dr. R. Erik Cantwell may recommend a root canal in West Jordan, Utah. Root canal therapy is the process by which our dentist removes infected dental pulp from a tooth. Symptoms are not always present, but if you experience any of the following, our dentist may perform root canal therapy:
• Severe toothache
• Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
• Darkening of a tooth
• Swelling and pain in the gums
• A pimple on the gums that will not go away
To perform root canal therapy, our dentist first takes an X-ray to examine the shape of your root canals and check for infection in the surrounding bone. An access hole is made in the tooth, through which the infected pulp is removed. Our dentist uses root canal files to clean the tooth all the way down the roots. The tooth is then sealed and a dental filling is used to close the access hole.
