When a patient is missing some or all of their permanent teeth, Dr. R. Erik Cantwell may recommend dentures in West Jordan, Utah. A denture is an appliance that restores the beauty and functionality of a patient’s smile by replacing missing teeth. Our office offers both complete and partial dentures.
Complete dentures are used when all of a patient’s teeth are missing. Complete dentures come in two types: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are made after any remaining teeth have been removed and the gums have had time to heal. Conventional dentures are usually placed eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been extracted. On the other hand, immediate dentures are made in advance, so they are ready for placement as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. This means that a patient will not have to be without teeth during the healing process. However, the gums and bones shrink during the healing period, so immediate dentures are usually used as temporary dentures.
Partial dentures are used when some of your natural teeth remain. A partial bridge is made of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base. This is sometimes attached to a metal framework that holds the denture in place in your mouth.
